Genesis 11:1-9  Tower of Babel

1 “Now the whole earth had one language and one speech. 2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt there. 3 Then they said to one another, "Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly." They had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar. 4 And they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth."

5 But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built. 6 And the LORD said, "Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them. 7 Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another's speech." 8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city. 9 Therefore its name is called Babel, because there the LORD confused the language of all the earth; and from there the LORD scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.” NKJV

Facts revealed:

Y      All the people of the earth were together and spoke the same language. They were located to the East of Babel.

Y      Apparently they were nomadic, because they were journeying, apparently  looking for the Garden of Eden since they journeyed from the East.

Y      They found a plain in the land of Shinar and they dwelt there.

Y      Then they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly .”

They had brick for stone and asphalt for mortar indicating they were skilful and not ape-men or cave-men as evolutionists want us to believe.

Remember the skills of the people before the Flood, they made tents, raised livestock, made and played musical instruments (i.e. flute and harp).  Also, they were instructors of every craftsman in bronze and iron and built cities. [see Genesis 4:16-22]

Y      God had said, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.” [Genesis 9:1,7]  But the people said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens, let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”

This is in direct rebellion from what God had commanded, and the fact that they wanted the tower to reach into the heavens indicates that they wanted to confront God directly in the place where they felt that God was dwelling.

Y      God is able to accomplish His own will without violating man’s right of free-choice, and man’s responsibility for the choices he makes.

Y      Yahowah came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built. God knows everything we think so there was no surprise to God when He came down to look it over.

Y      Yahowah said, “Indeed the people are echad (one -- the same term He uses when he says that God is ONE in Deuteronomy 6:4)  And, they have one language and this is what they begin to do.  Now nothing that they purpose to do will be withheld from them.”

˛     Thus God set a precedent that when all the peoples of the earth are together and speak the same language that they will be allowed to do anything they can imagine, purpose, or plan to do.  That is evident today as they do genetic engineering, cloning, splitting atoms and the like.

Y      God confused their language so they could not understand one another. This resulted in the abandonment of the tower and city, so they were scattered over the face of all the earth just as God wanted at the first.

Y      That is where Babel (“confusion, by mixing”) got its name, because there is where God confused the languages.

Y      From there they were scattered over the face of all the earth.  Remember the study of Genesis 10 which described the geographic areas to which each group was scattered as nations.
